A study commissioned by Sprint Nextel to analyze the carbon footprint of its supply chain has found that the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from their supply chain amounts to 2,082,983 tonnes, with a total cost of over $74 million. The study looked at 162 suppliers in the Sprint Nextel supply chain and calculated both the external damage costs, and the direct and indirect carbon emissions for each supplier.

The biggest contributor to the carbon footprint was Sprint's manufacturing vendors who accounting for 83 percent of the total carbon emissions and 67 percent of the expenditure. Out of the 162 suppliers studied, the top five suppliers contributed to 58 percent of the total carbon footprint of the supply chain and the top fifty suppliers contributed over 94 percent of the total carbon emissions.
